Social Impact

Graffiti is an intractable problem that can have negative impacts on the lives of thousands of young people Australia-wide. Lawlink crime statistics suggest a steady increase in incidents of malicious damage over the last decade. Recent changes to the Graffiti Control Act have increased reliance on punitive measures rather than addressing measures focused on crime prevention.

SAMA is in a unique position to implement youth-friendly graffiti prevention strategies, as it understands both the graffiti subculture and how to meet the communities’ expectations. With a clear track record of success and established reputation SAMA has a strong social impact. SAMA’s primary beneficiaries are artists belonging to the alienated graffiti subculture. By taking an asset-based approach to “the graffiti problem” it is easy to identify the artistic strengths this subculture possesses. Using street art to engage young people in a creative way has benefits for emotional regulation and employment too.

Workshops, consultancy

Workshops

SAMA has over 8 years of experience teaching people how to create aerosol art. Our workshops are fun, informative and never fail to get everyone painting! We deliver a wide array of workshop events, from one-day sessions through to 12-week intensive programs. Previous clients include the NSW Public High School System, Blue Mountains City Council, and Fusion Western Sydney to name a few.

Recently, we worked with ING Direct to provide painting classes for 900 of their staff during a team building event on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour! The SAMA difference is that we tailor a workshop program around your group’s needs. We take relevant sections from our Aerosol Art Education Curriculum to create a package that will work best for you. Whether your goal is to learn a new artistic medium, provide youth engagement or else create a corporate team building event, contact us via 1300 00 6978 or info@myst.com.au and let SAMA make your next workshop event easy!

Consulting

SAMA is an authority on Youth Friendly Graffiti Management Strategies and all things related to Street Art. We have worked with the Blue Mountains City Council though the creation of both their “Graffiti Management Plan” and “Crime Prevention Plan”. In 2014, the City of Sydney Council moved an amendment to model their strategies on SAMA’s approach.

Increasingly, organisations and local governments are becoming aware that Street Art contributes positively to the community and saves much needed money from budgetary bottom lines. Contact us via 1300 00 6978 or info@myst.com.au and start taking an evidence-based approach to Graffiti and Street Art.

Guest Speaking

SAMA is a successful social venture with a story to tell. We are a grassroots initiative that has grown directly from the needs of young people to take a place on the national stage, advocating for street art’s legitimacy. Previous guest speaking engagements include the 2nd Asset Based Community Development Asia Pacific Conference, Outward Bound and the School for Social Entrepreneurs Australia. SAMA has also presented at the Amnesty International NSW Youth conference 2015 held in Sydney.
